While termed a “blue revolution” because it is viewed as an efficient and sustainable way to feed a growing world population, the realities of responsibly expanding the industry are complex. There are various environmental and economic concerns around certain types of farming. For instance, some seafood farming is dedicated to supporting the supply of farmed carnivorous species, as is the case with much of the industrial farming supply from food-insecure countries in West Africa, which is used to feed carnivorous fish farmed in other countries and shipped to the Global North for consumption.
