Fish farms can bring economic benefits to local communities, whether through direct job creation, support for existing local economies, or the development and enhancement of existing infrastructure.

Yet, the significance of these advantages is debatable, and further, farms have presented a variety of challenges to local communities. Environmental degradation from waste products or inorganic materials creates unsightly or even hazardous marine areas. Fish pen escapes threaten native marine species. Competition with local fisheries and fishmongers poses a threat to the livelihoods of small business owners. 

Research from the University of Piraeus describes the wide range of risks and instabilities that the aquaculture industry poses to the Greek communities in which farms exist.
