Aquaculture can bring economic benefits to local communities, whether through direct job creation, support for existing local economies, or the development and enhancement of existing infrastructure.

Yet, the significance of these advantages is debatable. In fact, farms have presented a variety of challenges to local communities. Environmental degradation from waste products or inorganic materials creates unsightly or even hazardous marine areas. Fish escapes threaten native aquatic species. Competition with local fisheries and fishmongers poses a threat to the livelihoods of small business owners.
