Environmental projects, including aquaculture installations, require input from government, business, and communities.

Through a series of regulations, a government body sets the parameters of what is permissible in specific regions. The process of setting regulations requires the involvement of multiple entities, most especially the impacted communities.

While robust regulations are the first step to ensure the environmental health and safety of a project, equally robust oversight and tracking are necessary to guarantee adherence to these regulations. While many countries have established strong regulations governing industrial aquaculture activities, enforcement of these regulations may be inconsistent, allowing harmful practices to persist.
