Benchmarking Regulations

Regulations addressing environmental protections, social interests, and biosecurity concerns are put in place to ensure there is a balance to the economic motivations behind large-scale aquaculture projects.

While the parameters and agencies involved in setting them will vary by country, the key considerations for these projects typically include: distance from shore, water depth, distance between farms, allowable biomass, carrying capacity, and allowable nutrient output. Agencies in charge of the regulation process also consider the conditions for stakeholder engagement to ensure that community members are generally supportive of the project.
