Benchmarking Regulations

Regulations addressing environmental protections, social interests, and biosecurity concerns are put in place to ensure there is a balance to the economic motivations behind large-scale aquaculture projects.  

While regulation parameters will vary by country, the key considerations for these projects typically include: 

• distance from shore

• water depth

• distance between farms

• allowable biomass

• carrying capacity

• allowable nutrient output

Additionally, conditions for stakeholder engagement are considered to ensure that community members are generally supportive of the project.
