An environmental impact assessment (EIA) is put in place to identify, predict, evaluate, and mitigate the biophysical, social, and other relevant effects of development proposals. More than simply a final report, an EIA is a multidisciplinary and holistic process undertaken by stakeholders before they commit to major project decisions, with the ultimate goal of preventing environmental damage.
For aquaculture projects, the EIA process aims to identify potential effects in various areas, including impacts on water quality and threats to native marine life. The potential impact of these effects on the broader community, both socially and economically, is also an important consideration in this process. Findings also include opportunities to mitigate potential problems and approaches for longer-term project monitoring.
Given the wide range of aspects considered, this process can be lengthy and complex. Sufficient stakeholder participation is key to ensuring representation of all areas of concern in this process.
